Sri Lankan-origin off-roading pioneer Mitchell Perera, a prominent figure in the UAE’s off-roading and camping community, has passed away in Dubai, UAE, at the age of 59.
According to Gulf News, Perera, popularly known as ‘Mitch’, died on Wednesday (04) following complications from open-heart surgery he underwent on August 14.
Perera was widely recognised for his contributions to the UAE’s off-roading community and his longstanding involvement in the annual Gulf News Fun Drive, where he served as a veteran marshal, communications controller and project leader.
His relative, Dalrene Devadason, told Gulf News that Perera had undergone surgery after doctors diagnosed a leaking heart valve. He subsequently remained in intensive care, experiencing breathing difficulties, kidney dysfunction and lung complications.
Although his condition initially improved and he began rehabilitation, his health deteriorated in the days leading up to his death due to internal bleeding.
Perera was considered one of the pioneers of the UAE’s off-roading community, having developed a passion for desert driving and camping over several decades.
His involvement in the Gulf News Fun Drive began in 1986, when he participated as a navigator alongside his father, Chris Perera, who was a marshal.
Following in his father’s footsteps, he became a certified desert driver in 1987 and went on to serve as a marshal, helping guide participants through challenging desert terrain.
Over the years, he played a key role in organising and managing the annual event, contributing to its growth into one of the UAE’s most recognised recreational motoring events.
Perera is survived by his wife and son, who reside in Germany, and his elderly parents in Sri Lanka.
According to Gulf News, his wife and son are expected to travel to Dubai on Saturday to pay their final respects, after which his remains will be repatriated to Sri Lanka for funeral arrangements next week.
