KALIBO, Aklan—The first independent women-led and Scout-led women’s right group announced cross-border growth on Thursday, April 23.
In a Facebook post, Scouts Against Sexual Harassment and Abuse (SASHA) revealed their expansion in Sri Lanka together with the three Scouts from Vishvoda Scout Group, Kurunegala District of Sri Lanka Scout Association.
“This is more than a milestone—it is a movement crossing borders, cultures, and communities,” SASHA said in the post.
According to them, their fight against sexual harassment and abuse is not contained and exists wherever women and girls are “silenced, diminished, or made to feel unsafe.”
The Vishvoda Scout Group, through Project Novalya and SASHA recently partnered in International Women’s Day in raising awareness of women’s rights.
According to Cei Fernando, the National Chairperson of SASHA, it was an unprecedented milestone for them.
“During our all-leaders conclave last year, we only talked about targeting a SASHA National Congress within this year,” Fernando said.
“To be honest, we never have seen an international expansion at least for the next three years,” they added.
The group also announced a new chapter from Ramos National High School on Tuesday, April 21 which according to them was not an easy process.
“There were moments where progress was slowed by perspectives that did not fully recognize the importance of safe spaces and accountability,” the post said.
When asked about other expansion plans, Fernando said that they are currently talking with other Scouts interested on leading the way to start a SASHA in their countries.
“We never planned on bringing SASHA globally, but we guess, just like the reason why we started it here in the Philippines, it is a necessity for them too,” they said.
Sithumi Ranaweera, the national chairperson of SASHA – Sri Lanka looked back on how the foundation of their chapter started.
“What started as a small step through NOVALYA – ඇය වෙනුවෙන් ඈ (for her, by her) , my President’s Scout Award community service project, has grown into something far bigger than I ever imagined,” Ranaweera said in a message sent to AMAPS.
She said that the achievement they have now makes her happy and proud.
“I am truly honored and deeply grateful to be the Chairperson of SASHA – Sri Lanka,” she said.
According to her, the journey has been shaped by the support and belief of so many people, and she is committed to carrying forward with responsibility and purpose.
Both Fernando and Ranaweera expressed their excitement on whatever lies ahead for their chapters working together for building a “safer and stronger communities.”
