The People's Struggle Movement says trade unions and political activists will stage a protest near the Parliament roundabout today (Nov. 04). They are urging the Government to immediately withdraw the Protection of the State from Terrorism (PSTA) Bill, the Prevention of Organised Crime Bill and the Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Act. This was announced by Wasantha Mudalige, an executive committee member of the Movement, at a media briefing held in Colombo yesterday (Nov. 03). He called on all members of the public who value democracy to join the protest, which is scheduled to begin at 12.00 noon today. Mudalige said the Government was seeking to introduce legislation that would grant further powers to the Sri Lanka Police. He warned that, if the proposed Bills were passed, the period during which the Police could detain a person without producing them before a court would be extended from 24 to 72 hours.
