The National Council for Road Safety has announced plans to conduct inspections of vehicles, including buses operating in the public transport sector.
Chairman Manjula Kularatne said the vehicle inspection programme is expected to commence from September.
Noting that driver negligence and mechanical defects are among the leading causes of road accidents involving public transport vehicles in the country, he added that accordingly, authorities have decided to carry out comprehensive inspections of all vehicles engaged in public transportation, including buses.
Kularatne further stated that applications have already been called for the recruitment of qualified technical officers to conduct the inspections.
He added that the programme is expected to begin by the end of September once the recruitment process is completed.
