Colombo, Nov. 5 (Daily Mirror) - The Ministry of Women and Child Affairs has urged media institutions and social media activists to refrain from publishing photographs, videos and audio clips that could reveal the identities of schoolchildren involved in a recent protest.

In a statement, the Ministry said videos of the protest, featuring students dressed in school uniforms, along with audio clips of statements made by them, were being circulated on mainstream and social media platforms.

Following a review of the footage, the Ministry said there were concerns that students had allegedly been used for political purposes by exploiting their freedom of expression and children's rights.

It also alleged that some journalists covering the incident had provoked students into emotional states to obtain statements from them.

The Ministry said complaints had already been lodged with the National Child Protection Authority and the Police Bureau for the Prevention of Abuse of Children and Women, requesting investigations and appropriate action.

Media organisations and social media activists have therefore been requested to avoid publishing any photographs, videos or voice recordings that could identify the underage students involved.

The Ministry said such measures were necessary to protect the children from unnecessary criticism and undue public attention.

The statement was issued by Thilini Gunawardene, Media Secretary to the Minister of Women and Child Affairs.
