Colombo, Sep. 8 (Daily Mirror) - The Government has introduced a multi-purpose loan scheme to help Sri Lankan migrant workers make productive use of their overseas earnings for housing, education, business and other financial needs.

The scheme, implemented through the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE), is available to Sri Lankans employed overseas who can provide proof of employment and evidence of remittances received through formal banking channels.

Applicants are required to submit documents including their passport, employment agreement and records confirming the transfer of their overseas earnings through recognised banks.

Under the scheme, migrant workers can obtain loans to construct or purchase houses, establish or expand businesses, purchase vehicles and meet education-related expenses of their children.

The initiative is aimed at encouraging migrant workers to invest their earnings in long-term assets and productive activities while improving their financial security and contributing to the country’s economy.

Great. This is how India developed so fast because migrant tech workers re-invested in India. SL govt pleases cut out the red tape and ease the process so this country can flourish.

Exporting human capital Wednesday, 09 September 2026 05:23 AM

More benefits to those who pay 0% tax funded by taxing the rest at 36%. Message is clear, don't work for the country, don't start businesses here just migrate and serve another country and send some dollars

Jeeves Wednesday, 09 September 2026 09:33 AM

Yes; exporting human commodities is not a good long term strategy. It will stop us from developing our own country, and cause numerous social issues to both the isolated migrant worker abroad, and the split families left behind. We need a viable workforce here!

Risks and benefits Wednesday, 09 September 2026 08:51 AM

Not sure if this is entirely a good idea as loans might entrap the migrant worker to years of work abroad, and being endlessly away from their families in order to make repayments. Better to cap the loan so they are not out of their depth.

Other factors to consider Wednesday, 09 September 2026 02:41 PM

Good in theory, but some countries have poor employment practices. Workers are made to work long hours, often in difficult conditions and living facilities can be below expected standards. All these factors might contribute to health and welfare issues, which might impact on repayment of loans. We have no known reports of the welfare of our migrant workers so it is difficult to assess. Nor is it in the interest of brokers to advertise any issues.

OUT SOME RESPONSIBILITY ON TO THE EMPLOYMENT AGENCIES BE THEY GOVT OR PRIVATE. Wednesday, 09 September 2026 07:40 PM

WHAT YOU SAY IS CORRECT, AS WE HAVE HEARD OF PAST EXPERIENCES. HOWEVER, THE AGENCY SENDING OUT OUR PEOPLE FOR EMPLOYMENT GET PAID FOR IT WHICH PROBABLY REDUCES THE WORKERS WAGES, IN SOME INSTANCES AND STILL WE HEAR OF SOME PEOPLE PAYING THE AGENCIES TO GET THEM JOBS. WE HAVE HAD ENOUGHT OF PEOPLE PAYING AGENTS AND NO JOB, OR WHEN THEY LAND IN THE FOREIGN COUNTRY, THEY ARE SENT ON TO WORK IN OTHER FORMS OF EMPLOYMENT. OUR GOVT MUST HOLD ALL AGENCIES RESPONSIBLE FOR FOLLOWING UP TO ENSURE OUR WORKERS ARE NOT OVERWORKED AND ILL TREATED.
