Veteran thrower Dilhani Lekamge produced arguably the standout performance by a Sri Lankan athlete at the World Athletics Silver Level Continental Tour meeting in Bhubaneswar, India, finishing second in the women’s javelin throw at the Kalinga Stadium on Saturday.
Lekamge, who will celebrate her 40th birthday in January, threw 58.98 metres to secure the second place, narrowly missing out on victory to Brazil’s Jucilene Sales de Lima, who won with 59.13m.
Olympian Sumedha Ranasinghe claimed third place in the men’s javelin with a throw of 80.29m. India’s Rohit Yadav won with 87.68m, while compatriot Yash Vir Singh took second with 82.94m. The other Sri Lankans, R. Rathushan and T.N. Dhananjaya, finished sixth and eighth with 77.24m and 72.22m respectively.
Emerging sprinter Dineth Induwara produced a personal best of 10.27 seconds to win the first men’s 100m final. Only South Africa’s Tshepo Jason Tyantini (10.11) and Oman’s Ali Al Balushi (10.16), who finished first and second in the second final, were faster than the Sri Lankan.
Kalinga Kumarage secured a top finish, placing third in the men’s 400m in 45.61 seconds. Botswana’s Justice Oratile won in 45.35, ahead of South Africa’s Leendert Koekemoer in 45.40. Kumarage entered the meet with a seasonal best of 45.26, recorded at the selection trial in May, while his personal best stands at 45.07 from 2023.
Shanika Lakshani added another third-place finish for Sri Lanka in the women’s 1500m, clocking 4:27.22. India’s Pooja won in 4:17.24, with compatriot Lili Das second in 4:18.32.
Shehan Dilranga set a personal best of 1:49.19 in the men’s 800m to finish third in his final. India’s Prakash Balu Gadage won in 1:48.03, followed by Iraq’s Noureddine Adel Merzah in 1:48.97. South Africa’s Molifi Mohlomi produced the fastest 800m time of the meet, winning the second final in 1:47.45.
Meanwhile, sprinter Shafiya Yamick won her women’s 100metres final in a time of 11.71 seconds and Amasha de Silva finished third in her final with 11.92 seconds. They were ranked fifth and seventh overall according to their time.
The Bhubaneswar meeting, upgraded from Bronze to Silver level for 2026, attracted a strong international field featuring 36 athletes ranked among the world’s top 50.

The 11th Dialog Club Vision Rotary Par 3 Golf Classic 2026, organized by the Rotary Club of Colombo Metropolitan (RCCM) in partnership with title sponsor Dialog Club Vision, brought together more than 100 golfers at the Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC) on Saturday, 31 October.
Darshan Veeraragavan emerged as the Overall Gross Winner, taking home the latest iPhone 18 Pro, powered by Dialog, while Chris Benjamin claimed the Overall Net title and won an iPhone Air.
For the tournament, the Royal Colombo Golf Club’s traditional 18-hole course was transformed into a challenging par-54 layout, with every hole played as a par 3. The competition was held in two sessions, starting at 7.00 a.m. and 12.30 p.m., giving participants a different experience from the usual format.
Dialog Club Vision has been associated with the tournament for nine years and served as title sponsor for the second consecutive year.
Several other performances were rewarded with exclusive gifts from Dialog. Division B winner Arjun Fernando received a Dialog 5G Ultra MiFi, while runner-up Yeun Kook Chung was presented with Dialog AirFibre. Dhinuka Boralessa, winner of the Nearest to the Pin award, received AirPods Pro 3.
Over the past five years, RCCM has raised more than LKR 47 million through its charitable projects, supporting children’s healthcare, the provision of essential medical equipment, education, programmes for children with disabilities and other community welfare initiatives.

A keen contest is expected when unbeaten Zahira College, Maradana meet strong contenders Christ King College, Ja-Ela, in the much-awaited Under 19 Division II Tier ‘A’ Limited Overs Tournament final at Ananda Mawatha today.
Both teams have shown great urgency to improve their rankings this season. Zahira, a former Division I side, are campaigning to regain their place in the top tier, while Christ King are bidding for Division I promotion for the first time.
The result of this final has no bearing on those campaigns, but by reaching it, both teams have sent a strong signal to their rivals. Several of their players are also among the leading performers in the Division II Tier ‘A’ tournament.
For Christ King, spinner Lahiru Lakmal and 15-year-old paceman Chanidu Wenusara are the key strike bowlers, and both rank among the tournament’s top five wicket-takers. Lahiru has taken 19 wickets, including two five-wicket hauls. Wenusara has been consistent with the new ball, taking three or more wickets on four occasions. Together with Theekshana Kumara and Sayura Akash, they form a formidable bowling attack.
In batting, Akash and skipper Heli Anjana have scored half-centuries, while the top order, from Ashen Anjelo and Vidath Induthara to Vihanga Dilum, has contributed well.

For Zahira, Mohamed Maswooth, Mohamed Aqeel, Saifullah Sirajdeen and skipper Thabith Rizficar are among the tournament’s top performers.
Sri Lanka can expect a little extra spice in the pitches when their two match Test series against Pakistan gets underway next week, with pace and carry likely to be on the menu at both venues.
Rawalpindi hosts the opening Test from Monday before the teams head to Lahore, where the Gaddafi Stadium, the scene of Sri Lanka’s 1996 World Cup triumph, stages the second.
The tourists have already had a taste of what awaits them. There was plenty of life in the surface during the warm up game in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, where Sri Lanka emerged victorious from a low scoring contest.
The conditions could open the door for Eshan Malinga, the only uncapped player among the five seamers on tour, to make his Test debut.
Asitha Fernando leads the pace pack, while Dilshan Madushanka’s left-arm variety and impressive returns during the limited-overs leg make him a compelling choice. That leaves Lahiru Kumara and Malinga jostling for the third seamer’s berth.
The Sunday Island learns that Malinga could get the nod ahead of the experienced Kumara, who remains Sri Lanka’s quickest bowler.
Seam bowling all-rounder Milan Rathnayake is also firmly in the frame for the series opener, with room likely for just one specialist spinner. Should Sri Lanka take that route, off-spinner Keshara Nuwantha is tipped to edge out left-armer Prabath Jayasuriya.
Preparing grassy pitches to catch Sri Lanka on the hop is hardly a new ploy in Asia. Bangladesh rolled out a similar welcome in 2024, only to find that the tourists could give as good as they got. Asitha, in particular, bowled with fire as Sri Lanka swept the series 2-0.
Indeed, seam bowling has been one of Sri Lanka’s brighter success stories over the past three years. With diets now under scrutiny and greater emphasis placed on fitness, the expectation is that the quicks will find another gear.
While Malinga closes in on a maiden Test cap, wicketkeeper Anjala Bandara may have to keep his champagne on ice.
The 22-year-old from Matale has caught the eye with his enterprising batting, but his glovework remains a work in progress. Captain Kusal Mendis is expected to take the gloves in Rawalpindi.
Former captain Dhananjaya de Silva is set to retain his place, although whether he lasts the distance in this World Test Championship cycle remains to be seen. His laid back approach came under scrutiny during his captaincy, and he now needs runs to keep questions over his place at bay.
Sri Lanka’s hopes of reaching the World Test Championship final have faded following series defeats in the Caribbean and against India at home. After Pakistan, they have an away series in New Zealand and a home assignment against South Africa next year.
Mendis begins his tenure as Test captain next week, giving Sri Lanka one leader across all three formats for the first time since Angelo Mathews.
For a player whose early career was punctuated by disciplinary troubles and suspensions, the appointment marks quite a turnaround. The captaincy is a considerable feather in his cap, but there remains unfinished business with the bat.
The youngster who once put Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood to the sword promised a great deal. Sri Lankan supporters will hope that, with the added responsibility, Mendis finally turns those rich glimpses of talent into a sustained weight of runs.
