Cuban ambassador pays courtesy call on Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister

Colombo, March 26, 2026. Cuban Ambassador Patricia Lázara Pego Guerra paid a courtesy call on the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, the Hon. Dr. C. Harini Amarasuriya.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister congratulated the Ambassador on the presentation of her credentials on February 24. She also expressed interest in Cuba’s current economic situation following the recent escalation of the United States blockade, and reaffirmed her government’s historic stance against it—a position that was appreciated by the Cuban diplomat.

Talks focused on bilateral and multilateral matters of mutual interest, including opportunities to expand cooperation in agriculture, particularly through knowledge sharing and technical expertise to support sustainable farming practices.

Both sides reaffirmed the longstanding and cordial relations between Cuba and Sri Lanka, underscoring the significance of their bilateral ties over the years. They agreed that there remains considerable potential for exchanges in the scientific, academic, cultural, and sports fields.

Sri Lanka was one of the first countries to recognize the Cuban revolutionary government following its triumph in 1959, and diplomatic relations have now been maintained continuously for 66 years.

The meeting was also attended by the Secretary to the Prime Minister; Additional Secretary to the Prime Minister, Ms. Sagarika Bogahawatta; and Director General of the Latin America and the Caribbean Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Ratnasingam Kohularangan.
