The Presidential Commission investigating coal transactions today (04) questioned former Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka and recorded a statement from him.

Mr Ranawaka appeared before the Commission this afternoon following a notification issued to him.

The Coal Commission had recently issued notices to Mr Ranawaka over various allegations. Sources said the statement was recorded from him accordingly.

Mr Ranawaka served as Minister of Energy from 23 April 2010 to 28 January 2013 and subsequently under the Maithripala Sirisena Government from 12 January 2015 to 17 August 2015.

The Commission's term is scheduled to end on 16 December.

Meanwhile, the Presidential Commission has also requested former Secretary to the Ministry of Power and Energy M.C.C. Fernando to appear before it and submit information regarding the coal transactions. However, it is reported that he had not done so as of yesterday.

Mr Fernando, who is currently overseas, also served as Chairman of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) for a period.

The Commission has so far recorded evidence from 72 key officials in connection with the coal transactions, while a total of 370 statements have been recorded.

The Presidential Commission is chaired by Supreme Court Justice Gihan Kulatunga. Its other members are Court of Appeal Justice Adithya Patabendi and High Court Judge Sanjeewa Somaratne.
